ProStart students put on their semester dinner last night at Timbers in Staples. The students prepared an Italian themed buffet. The Timbers staff was so helpful and kind to the students and were genuinely interested in student success. The students did everything from setting the tables to cooking the meal to cleaning up after. This is a great opportunity for students to learn skills they could use in a future job and for employers to possibly find students to hire. Thank you to everyone who put work in to make this a successful evening and to the community members and families who supported us last night.

Tackle Cancer Night returns this Friday, September 20th. 6:00pm Kick Off vs. Red Lake (Yes, 6pm) We will be offering luminaries for $5.00 that will go out on the field, post-game. You can purchase them, through the 3rd quarter, by the gate. Our 7th and 8th Grade Football Players will be setting them in place, immediately after the game. They sold out quickly last year! Last year, we were a featured team on KARE 11 "Prep Sports". Randy Shaver was deeply moved by our evening. (You can hear it in his voice...and later my conversations him). The images were and are powerful. The Boosters are grilling again and will be donating the evenings proceeds to the cause! Enjoy a burger basket that's in support of a great cause. We have invited Red Lake's team and fans to join is in our "Moment of Silence" post game. Last year...along with Long Prairie, we showed a state: It's a Great & Classy Time To Be A Cardinal!

If the referendum fails, Staples-Motley Public Schools will have to find different ways to address the facility issues. The school board has concluded that our needs are too great to ignore. For the next year or two, we will continue to spend money out of our operating budget each year for repairs and maintenance. In the long term, any solution will have a tax impact, and a partial solution will require additional spending soon.

There has been no major investment in our core educational facilities since 1986. The auditorium in 1992 is not considered core academic space. Consequently, our facilities are not up to today’s standards for safety, classroom space, education or maintenance. As a small school system that provides big opportunities, Staples-Motley works hard to use space wisely. However, we have reached the point where new investments are needed to sustain success. #Build2170

The Staples-Motley School District would like to issue a correction as well as an apology to our community. Last week, many of you received a letter in the mail from the school district discussing the upcoming referendum. It incorrectly listed the dollar amount for each question on the first page of the letter. We sincerely apologize for the error and any confusion it caused. Staff members worked over the weekend to fix this error and a new letter has been sent. If there are any questions or comments please contact Superintendent, Dr. Ron Bratlie. Phone: (218) 894-5400

There will be an official welcome back for state speech participants at 12:45 today at the school. Congratulations again to our amazing team on taking its first ever State Tournament trophy for coming in 3rd!! Congratulations to our three state champions, Jonah Johnson in Creative Expression and Andrew Bates and Jaydon Friedel in Duo! Congratulations to Ethan Gilbertson for taking 4th in Creative Expression! Congratulations to Sadie Thompson for taking 7th and Caden Mrazek for 8th in Humor and Macy Judd for nabbing 8th in Poetry! Also, we are so proud of our 2 state tournament veterans, Ari Brings and Samantha Mrazek, who should have been in finals. The results may say you placed 8th or 9th, but in our minds and in the minds of most of the coaches and judges in the state you are in the top 3 in the state! And lastly, a shout out to our speech newbie Luke who in his 1st year of speech made it to state and placed 16th. Again, way to go all of you and all the rest of our team we wished could have been there as well!

The 2019 Staples-Motley and Sourcewell Students of Character recipients are: Hailey Owen and Bryce Weber ! They’ll be recognized at the Sourcewell Banquet, this Wednesday evening at Madden’s. What a thrill it’s been to watch them grow, achieve and lead!-Mr. S and Mrs. Olsen. Congratulations to you both! Read on: Bryce Weber: Through his time with us at Staples-Motley High School, Bryce has taken on his obstacles and overcome them with tremendous resilency. He’s done so by believing in the teachers and support staff of whom from day one recognized his smile, gentle demeanor and kindness as characteristics worth reaching for and embracing. Bryce, your trust in us and your growth have not only validated staffs beliefs in you, you’ve empowered us to believe deeper in ourselves. You’ve been referred to as a “Staples-Motley Miracle Student”. You’re the example, so many should review. We wish you the best as you venture into your welding program. We’re proud of you. Congratulations! Hailey Owen: Over the past 4 years we’ve witnessed Hailey strive for her own empowerments. One could say she was shy, however, we choose to say, she was patient. Hailey, was just awaiting “her time”. She’s become one of the officers of our local FFA Chapter which has earned her state honors in Forestry and Natural Resources Competitions, along with her State FFA Degree. She was recognized by her peers for the “Can Do Award” due to her consistency in helping with nearly every event over the years. She’s accepted a place in the CLC Natural Resources Program for the upcoming fall, where we’re confident she’ll continue on the remarkable journey she’s earned. Hailey, you’re a leader. Congratulations!

Congratulations SMHS Speech team for taking 2nd place at the Sub-Section Tournament on Saturday! Every student we took there will "suit up" for the Section Tourney next Saturday April 6th in Pillager because you advanced or are an alternate. We don't think that's ever happened before! Way to go team! In Creative Expression all of our guys advanced with Jonah Johnson taking 1st for the 9th week in a row, Ethan Gilbertson taking 2nd, and Micah Larson taking 6th. In Discussion, our only competitor Grace Allen took 5th. Our only competitor in Drama, Amber Deegan, grabbed 2nd place, while 2 of our 3 Duos are advancing to Sections--Jaydon Friedel and Andrew Bates in 2nd place and Cy Johnson and Iain Sams in 3rd. AJ Nienow and Keegan Bestland are alternates at 8th place. Katie Niemi, our only Extemp Reader, took 5th place and advances to Sections, as does Antonio Cuetara for taking 2nd in Extemp. Speaking. Both of our Great Speeches competitors, the dynamic siblings, Ari and Alex Brings, tied with straight 1s all day, but Ari was awarded 1st and Alex 2nd on strength of their opponents. In Humor, all 4 of our competitors advance with Caden Mrazek in 1st, Luke Bates in 2nd, Sadie Thompson in 4th, and Connor Judd in 6th. All 3 of our Informative gals get to advance with Lilly Niemi in 1st, Kimberly Stachowiak in 2nd, and Torii Nienow in 5th. Our only Original Oratory competitor, Samantha Mrazek, took 1st, as did our only Poetry entry, Macy Judd! In Prose, our only competitor, Brooke Ferdon, is an alternate at 7th place, and we had no one compete in Storytelling this year. This may be the 1st time we advance in 12 out of 13 categories! The SMHS coaching staff is proud of you all!

Polar Plunge Recap: It’s no secret we do Special Olympics very well here. That’s in part to their coaches, families and transportation. However, our General Ed students are not to be overlooked within this program. I’m thrilled, yet not surprised that our students raised $3107 for the Polar Plunge (2nd to Brainerd) by only $1000. We brought 48 jumpers: THE MOST of any school in the region! We laughed, played and supported one another. What was the most endearing, was on the ride up, we learned we were just short of $3000. Our students, began passing money up to Mrs. Klefsaas and I. It was incredible! And, even more telling was learned we had other students direct some of their donations to those students that were unable to hit the $50 minimum! How cool is that? As one student told me that afternoon: “Mr. S, days like today don’t happen like this in my life without our high school!” To the great people of Staples-Motley: The dedication and care our students showed, is cultivated alongside a trusted staff and the relationships that go beyond “teaching in a classroom”, in addition to the tremendous support, guidance and love from their families and our communities. That afternoon, this principal was very proud to represent our amazing students, staff and communities who clearly made it known: “It’s a GREAT time to be a Cardinal!” Mike Schmidt, CAA Staples-Motley High School Principal "Onward Cardinals"
