Polar Plunge Recap: It’s no secret we do Special Olympics very well here. That’s in part to their coaches, families and transportation. However, our General Ed students are not to be overlooked within this program. I’m thrilled, yet not surprised that our students raised $3107 for the Polar Plunge (2nd to Brainerd) by only $1000. We brought 48 jumpers: THE MOST of any school in the region! We laughed, played and supported one another. What was the most endearing, was on the ride up, we learned we were just short of $3000. Our students, began passing money up to Mrs. Klefsaas and I. It was incredible! And, even more telling was learned we had other students direct some of their donations to those students that were unable to hit the $50 minimum! How cool is that? As one student told me that afternoon: “Mr. S, days like today don’t happen like this in my life without our high school!” To the great people of Staples-Motley: The dedication and care our students showed, is cultivated alongside a trusted staff and the relationships that go beyond “teaching in a classroom”, in addition to the tremendous support, guidance and love from their families and our communities. That afternoon, this principal was very proud to represent our amazing students, staff and communities who clearly made it known: “It’s a GREAT time to be a Cardinal!” Mike Schmidt, CAA Staples-Motley High School Principal "Onward Cardinals"

As our season comes to a close, I look back on it and what an incredible season it has been. We have had our most positive and competitive team yet, and it has been a joy to coach them. Today we had some of our fastest relays we have ever swum since we began coaching and the Medley and 200 Free Relays dropped a minimum of 3 seconds from previous years’ relay team bests. The growth this team has shown in just 3 years is unbelievable and I can’t wait to see what this young team accomplishes in the years to come! Proud of our Cardinal Swim Team!

#Build2170! One new K-12 building, two buildings (K-6 and 7-12), and three buildings were options that were discussed extensively. Where to build one school including a location halfway between Motley and Staples, Motley-Staples Middle School, Staples-Motley High School, Staples-Motley Elementary were all considered. Issues including land and utility cost, land available at current sites, renovation costs, existing fields and student safety were analyzed before making the decision to utilize the current Staples-Motley Elementary building.
#Build2170! Where do you go to get “up to date” information? District website: www.isd2170.k12.mn.us “BUILD 2170”; Twitter@isd2170; Facebook: Staples-Motley School District and school board members, administrative members, Staples World. Build 2170. Two common questions are: How much does it cost? and What is the tax impact? We are estimating the cost for new construction of 187,000 square feet and renovation of 47,000 square feet to be approximately $60 Million. The tax impact on an average Staples-Motley home valued (2016) at $121,956 is estimated to be $1.05/day.

To the 2170 Community: I want to share with you the impressive sportsmanship that I witnessed at today's (yesterday's) Johanna Olson Cross Country Meet in Wadena. The members of the Staples-Motley Cross Country Team are not only a great team, but a classy and respectful group of student/athletes. This trait, to me, is even more important than winning meets. Each member of the Staples-Motley Team gathered at the finish line of the varsity meet and cheered on everyone still running until the last runner crossed the line; not just the members of the Cardinal Squad, but everyone in the race. We had many staff and volunteers at the line, we were all impressed by the great sportsmanship. You could see it wasn't fake go through the motion acting, but genuine enthusiasm and high fives. I'd like to congratulate the athletes, coaches and administration. The class shown was impressive and deserves recognition. As a Staples High School Alum, Class of 1994, I am proud of my High School and know that there is great leadership and great kids doing great things! Keep up the good work and thank you! Effort, Attitude and Enthusiasm with Class are traits that will take young people to great heights. Norm Gallant Activities Director Wadena-Deer Creek High School

Tonight was a great night to connect with families. I am especially excited I was able to meet with 100% of my first graders. What a great way to start off the school year.
For the 2nd year in a row, the high school students and staff have found their way to the top! Strong academics, the achievement gap is getting smaller, College In Schools Courses (26 of them providing nearly $160,000 of free tuition) and a healthy selection of diverse CTE offerings...all listed as to why they’re being recognized by U. S. News and World Report! I’m incredibly proud and grateful to be a part of ISD 2170!! Mr. “S”
We have cancelled practice today due to inclement weather for our 7/8 grade students. Thanks, Kappler

Question from the community about Build 2170. Q. How can the district afford to build a new building when the district has a budget deficit? A. The building referendum monies can only be used to build the building and cannot be used for staff or other operating costs. Think of it as two separate bank accounts. The district will have one bank account to build the new building and one bank account to pay for staff and other operating expenses.
Question from the community about Build 2170. Q. Why does the school district want one building? A. It is not affordable to continue operating three separate buildings. If we do not streamline operations and become more efficient, the district could go into statutory operating debt in the near future. For example, the district could reduce expenditures of over $200,000 a year just in transportation and staffing.
